Description

Malt Extract Yeast Agar (MYA)

What is MYA?

Malt Extract Agar Mix is a popular gelatinous medium employed for cultivating, isolating, and manipulating fungi, yeast, and molds. It serves as a vital method for the prolonged maintenance of mushroom cultures. Key applications of MYA include:

  • Germination of spores
  • Isolation of specific mushroom strains
  • Cultivation of mushroom mycelium for transfer to grain spawn
  • Assessment of liquid culture contamination
  • Long-term storage of cultures

Why Choose Malt Extract Agar Yeast for Mushroom Cultivation?

Malt Extract

Rich in maltose, malt extract provides an optimal environment conducive to the growth of yeast and mold, thanks to its abundant carbon, protein, and nitrogenous resources that fuel fungal development.

Agar-Agar

Derived from seaweeds such as gracilaria and gelidium, Agar-Agar is free from animal ingredients. Its unique gelling properties and stability make it an ideal firming and thickening agent in Petri dish experimentation.

Yeast (S. Cerevisiae)

Cultivated on sugar beet molasses, the S. Cerevisiae strain is a potent source of easily absorbed amino acids and proteins, enriching mushrooms with dietary fiber, Vitamin D, and essential B Complex vitamins.

Note: MYA differs from MEA, as it includes Yeast while MEA comprises only Malt Extract and Agar.

Instructions

Dissolve the MYA mix in the indicated amount of hot water and mix thoroughly. Use a magnetic stirrer for optimal results. Pour the mixture gradually to avoid air bubble formation. Autoclave or pressure cook the mixture at 15 psi for 20 minutes. Pour into Petri dishes at about 50 degrees Celsius and allow to set for 10 minutes without stirring post-autoclave to prevent air bubbles. After setting, inoculate the dishes and seal with parafilm. Set aside for a week to monitor for contamination. Store the Petri dishes upside down to minimize condensation.

Don’t have a pressure cooker? No worries; message us and we’ll provide detailed microwave sterilization instructions with your purchase. Please see our listing Make Agar Plates,to find out what you need. Initially, you will need a Reagent Bottle : a 500ml bottle is suitable for microwave use, whereas a 1000ml bottle is needed for use with a sterilizer.
