- Benefit: Fragmenting the mycelium into smaller entities allows for faster, more uniform colonization of the substrate. It is advisable to operate the stirrer at 90% speed during this stage.
Aeration During Colonization:
- Purpose: Beyond initial colonization, the stirrer shifts from breaking down mycelium to merely agitating the mixture.
- Benefit: Soft, continuous stirring introduces air, crucial for mycelium growth and metabolic activity. Adequate aeration ensures mycelium receives necessary oxygen. During this phase, use the stirrer at 30-40% speed.
