Mushroom Slants for Extended Mycelium Storage (2+ Years)
This storage method is optimal for long-term preservation of mushroom cultures. Developed through our extensive lab experience, we now offer this effective solution to both professionals and hobbyists. Named for their slanted cooling process, which maximizes surface area, these slants are available with or without wood, utilizing premium birch and the finest borosilicate bottles, which are reusable and autoclave-friendly.
YOUR PURCHASE INCLUDES:
- One 50ml Borosilicate Bottle with nutrient-rich agar, available with or without birch wood, securely sealed with Parafilm.
- An additional strip of Parafilm.
The birch wood variant is particularly beneficial for hardwood-loving mycelium species, providing a fibrous substrate that maintains enzymatic activity. These options are also suitable for species that do not decompose wood.
These bottles are designed to stand upright without support, thanks to their flat-bottomed design.
The agar within is crafted from a nutrient-rich blend of grain water, peptone, MEA, yeast, and potato water, ensuring a dense, moisture-retentive medium suitable for long-term mycelium survival. Introducing hardwood in the agar encourages vigorous mycelial growth, preparing it for eventual transfer to its final growing medium.
While Petri dishes are commonly used for short-term culture storage and propagation due to their large surface area, they tend to dry out quickly, making slants a superior choice for long-term viability.

These slants feature a screw lid that can be loosely closed (95%) and then sealed with parafilm to ensure breathability and longevity of the culture. Opting for glass over plastic not only enhances visibility but also adds a premium look and feel; both the glass and lid are autoclavable for repeated use.
Professionally produced in a sterile environment, these slants have been refined over years to achieve perfection.
Benefits:
- Space-efficient.
- Creates a robust mother culture for extended storage.
- Available in 50ml size, with or without wood inclusion.
- Exposure to a diverse nutrient mix enhances culture viability.
- Screw-top design prevents mycelium from drying and minimizes moisture loss.
Instructions for use:
- Upon receiving a culture, propagate it in a Petri dish, then transfer a small piece from the leading edge into your slant using a still air box or in front of a flow hood.
- Monitor for a few days until the slant is fully colonized with white mycelium and free of contamination.
- Store the colonized slant in the fridge at approximately 5 to 8 degrees Celsius.
- To maintain viability, briefly revive the culture from dormancy every two years by repeating the process.
For orders of 10 or more slants, custom media formulations like Potato Dextrose, Peptone, Yeast, and Activated Charcoal (PDYPA) are available. Check our PDYPA agar plate listing for more details.
